drey’s thoughts:
I haven’t read a Nora Roberts novel in a long time (except for her J.D. Robb In Death series, which I’ve started listening to on my commute), and thought The Liar would be a good opportunity to reacquaint myself with her storytelling style.
The Plot: A widow finds out her deceased husband is a first-class a-hole, who left her adrift from her family and buried in a mountain of debt. Not only that, he’s left trouble on her trail, and that’s the one thing she can’t forgive him for – putting the life of their daughter in danger. The Liar weaves a compelling tale of betrayal and resolve, with Shelby Foxworth smack dab in the middle of it all. Will she figure out what’s what?
The Characters: Shelby is a plucky, gutsy woman. Sure, she has her moments of weakness and waffling, but overall she’s not to be messed with – she just waited a while before living up to that realization. Her daughter Callie is a treat, and her family is a wonderful collection of people we’d all want for our own.
And Griffin Lott. What a guy. Strong, smart, brave, he’s a hero for any woman. But he’s Shelby’s – if she wants him. I loved the scene where they meet for the first time, you could almost actually see the sizzle-bam of love at first sight. On his part anyway, Shelby was still too worried and sad to think about love.
The Story: The Liar is a story with all the necessary elements: a plot to keep your interest, and characters you like and feel for, wrapped up and delivered with a dose of warm fuzzies and laughter to balance the tension. I have no complaints, and will be burying my TBR pile under more of Nora Roberts’ books…
